2007 Season Rule Changes
How do you view the mandated rule changes for the 2007 season? Here's Wikipedia's summary of the changes...
* The instant replay system, used since the 1999 season, was finally made as permanent rule. Previously, it was renewed on a biennial basis.
* The system will also be upgraded to use high-definition technology. However, the systems at the Dallas Cowboys' Texas Stadium, the Indianapolis Colts' RCA Dome, and the New York Jets and the New York Giants' Giants Stadium will not receive the HDTV updates since those stadiums will be replaced in a few years.
* In addition, the amount of time allotted for the referee to review a play was reduced from 90 seconds to one minute.
* After a play is over, players who spike the ball in the field of play, other than in the end zone, will receive a 5-yard penalty.
* Forward passes that unintentionally hit an offensive lineman will no longer be an illegal touching penalty, but deliberate actions are still penalized.
* Roughing-the-passer penalties will not be called on a defender engaged with a quarterback who simply extends his arms and shoves the passer to the ground.
* During situations where crowd noise becomes a problem (when it becomes too loud that it prevents the offensive team from hearing its signals), the offense can no longer ask the referee to reset the play clock.

I like the rule changes, except for reducing the time for reviewing a play. If you are going to do this, spend the extra 30 seconds and get it right.

Until, of course, they don't. Then, we will all be screaming how bad the new rule is. I figured I'd start screaming now. I think reducing the time is wrong.

RE: 2007 Season Rule Changes
Roughing the passer might be another dumb penalty. It seems like the league should just give the QB's a baby bottle and let them have an easy time in the back field especially QB's like Favre, mannning and brady. you touch them and it is a penalty.

RE: 2007 Season Rule Changes
I think the upgrades to the technology only make sense and I have no problem with the reduction in time watching the replay. If it is a bad referee, he is going to mess it up no matter how long they give them to review the tapes. The rule that always bothers me is when they get worked up over something like spiking the ball. Jeez, with guys this size that should really be the least of their concerns. I guess they have to draw lines somewhere, that one just seems silly to me.
